How do I work?
There is no “one size fits all” therapy or therapist for everyone and their needs. Hence, I practice an integrative/holistic therapeutic approach. This way, I can better cater to what my clients need through working with techniques and elements from different therapeutic orientations. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy (ST), Positive Psychology (PP), Rogers, etc. I am also continuously learning and attending training in order to be able to acquire new techniques and approaches that may benefit my clients.
Sometimes issues arise and persist, ones that we may not be able to tackle on our own and it’s okay to have to ask for external help. My goal is to help you better understand the issues or struggles at hand and how to overcome them or better manage them.
I aim to provide my clients with a judgment-free zone where they can express themselves freely and openly. It is important to me that my clients feel comfortable and safe with me in order to start a healthy therapeutic journey. Therapy is a joint effort and it is when working together with the client, that progress is truly made.
Who am I?
My name is Roxanne Hernandez. I was born in California to a Hungarian mother and Mexican father, both of whom immigrated to the United States a few years prior. As I grew older, my cultural identity became a greater source of anxiety and confusion for me. Feeling as though I don’t completely fit in with any of my cultures made me feel like an outsider even in my own ‘home’ countries.
I originally moved to The Netherlands to pursue my university education. I found comfort in the fellow culturally confused people I met here and ultimately ended up staying to work in The Netherlands afterward too. I therefore have experience working with internationals, expats, and immigrants dealing with the adjustment and the many hardships that can come with living abroad. This is naturally an area that I myself can relate to and it allows me to gain better insight into the issues some may be facing. Aside from this, there are a number of other issues I work with as well, regardless of whether they are related to being an international or not.
I don’t want to make anyone feel like an outsider and I firmly believe in accepting everyone for who they are and as they are. That being said, I hope I can create the accepting and safe environment that you need and deserve.
My education has primarily been in English, so it has become my strongest language. I am also fluent in Hungarian as I grew up speaking it and lived some years in Budapest. My Spanish is that of a 'heritage speaker’, so it is not at a native level per se, and for sessions in Spanish, I may utilize some elements of 'Spanglish'.
I provide sessions in English and Hungarian in The Hague and online.
